TfL proposes mandatory electric minicabs for all new licences by 2028
Transport for London plans to require every newly licensed private-hire vehicle from 2028 to be fully electric, aiming to slash NOx and CO2 emissions.
Transport for London has launched a consultation that would obligate every newly licensed private-hire vehicle in the city to be fully electric starting in 2028, while wheelchair-accessible cars would have until July 2030 to comply. TfL estimates the shift could cut nitrogen-oxide emissions by nine per cent and carbon-dioxide output by 35 % within ten years, with possible reductions of up to 97 % over eighteen years. The plan also tightens licensing rules, banning vehicles that reach ten years of age and reducing the licence renewal window from two years to twelve months.
Currently, 35.5 % of the 94,661 licensed private-hire cars are fully electric and another 35.2 % are plug-in hybrids. The consultation runs until 11.59 pm on 2 December, and officials are urging drivers and the public to submit feedback.
Why it matters
Switching to electric minicabs could dramatically improve London’s air quality and reduce greenhouse-gas emissions.
