TG Jones to close a third of its in-store post offices by early 2027, sparking fears of postal deserts
Seventy post offices inside TG Jones stores will be shut by early 2027, representing over a third of the chain’s network and raising concerns about service gaps.
TG Jones, rebranded after its acquisition by private-equity firm Modella, will shut 70 post offices located inside its stores by early 2027, after 36 closures earlier this year. This represents over one-third of the 180 branches the chain ran before its July restructuring plan. Union senior Mole Meade of the CWU warned that the cuts risk turning many communities into “postal deserts,” depriving residents of essential services such as passport checks and banking.
The Post Office is actively looking for replacement operators; Stirling has already reopened a former TG Jones site, a permanent branch is slated for Ipswich in November, and temporary locations are planned for Maidenhead and Uxbridge. The closures coincide with Morrisons’ own reduction of 52 in-store post offices, further tightening access in towns like Stevenage, Bracknell, Orpington, Hull and York. The Post Office emphasized its commitment to replace every lost branch and noted strong interest from postmasters to take over the locations.
Why it matters
The shutdown threatens essential postal and banking services for many UK communities, impacting residents and local businesses.
