Thai and Japanese firms show strong interest in Sarawak's petrochemical projects
Sarawak Premier Abang Johari said Thai and Japanese investors are attracted by the state’s low-carbon energy strengths and oil-gas revenues.
During the celebration of the Yang Dipertuan Negeri’s birthday, Sarawak Premier Abang Johari announced that investors from Thailand and Japan are keen on the state’s petrochemical sector because of its low-carbon energy capabilities and oil-gas revenue potential. He referenced the Adong Kechil West well near Marudi, which is currently producing 800 barrels of oil daily. By mid-next year, Petros intends to develop another well to feed gas to the Miri power station and will also drill an exploratory well at Kuala Baram, which shows promising gas prospects.
The premier emphasized Sarawak’s strong renewable energy base, particularly hydropower, as a solid foundation for attracting industries that require large amounts of clean, competitively priced power. He also noted that the state has secured RM11.2 billion in approved investments in the first half of the year, reflecting continued investor confidence.
