Thailand announces two-day holiday in Bangkok and nearby provinces to aid flood relief

Following days of intense rain that left parts of Bangkok submerged, authorities have designated September 28 and 29 as special public holidays in the capital and the neighboring provinces of Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani and Samut Prakan. Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul explained that the holidays aim to reduce flood impact and facilitate movement for affected citizens. He noted that additional rain is expected in the central and eastern parts of the country, though Bangkok will see only light to moderate showers.

Governors have been instructed to closely watch flood-hit zones, dispatch personnel, machinery and vehicles, and establish temporary shelters with food, relief supplies and medical services. The government also plans to have governors declare disaster areas promptly and request further emergency funds from the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation if conditions deteriorate. While rainfall has lessened since Saturday night, many streets—especially near Don Mueang Airport and along Phetchaburi Road—remain flooded, stranding vehicles.
