Thailand joins 130+ nations in declaring rubella eliminated
Thailand has met the target for rubella elimination, becoming the latest country to remove the disease from public health concern.
The successful vaccination campaign enabled Thailand to achieve rubella elimination, placing it among more than 130 countries that have done the same. The World Health Organization highlighted strong immunisation services, effective surveillance, and public trust as key factors. Rubella, also known as German measles, poses serious risks to pregnant women, including miscarriage and birth defects, but can be prevented through vaccination. WHO representative Dr Nilesh Buddha said the milestone shows elimination is feasible and moves the region closer to eradicating both measles and rubella.
Why it matters
Eliminating rubella prevents serious pregnancy complications and demonstrates the power of coordinated vaccination programs.
