Thailand to launch early retirement scheme for civil servants starting fiscal 2027

The Thai government plans an early retirement program for public employees, beginning in fiscal 2027, with the first phase costing about 7 billion baht.

Thailand’s administration intends to introduce an early retirement package for its civil service, slated to start in fiscal 2027. The first rollout will focus on employees aged 50 and above, with provisions for 40-year-old staff who face health issues or family-care responsibilities. Estimated costs for this initial stage are about 7 billion baht.

Negotiations are ongoing over compensation levels, which may top 12 times the monthly wage. The measure aligns with Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul’s emphasis on tightening public finances and creating a reserve for potential economic shocks. Relevant ministries are finalising details before presenting the proposal to the cabinet for approval.

Why it matters

The program aims to cut public-sector payroll and free up funds for Thailand’s fiscal stability.
