Thanos Plevris proposes African-based migrant returns under new five-country plan
Immigration minister Thanos Plevris said migrants could be sent to African nations, outlining a pilot scheme with Rwanda and a five-state framework.
In a recent interview, Thanos Plevris clarified that his approach does not reject migrant integration entirely, but limits it to Africa. He presented a revised plan involving Austria, Germany, Denmark, Greece and the Netherlands, allowing deportations to third countries when asylum is denied. The proposal drops the previously discussed “return hubs” and opens to any arrangement the participating states prefer. A pilot with Rwanda is slated to start around the middle of the upcoming year, coinciding with Greece’s EU presidency.
Why it matters
The plan could reshape EU asylum policy and shift migrant processing to African partners.
