Thawing permafrost puts Swiss Alpine village at risk of massive rock slide

Scientists warn that melting permafrost is destabilizing the Spitze Stei rock formation above Kandersteg, raising the chance of a large landslide.

A substantial rock and ice formation called Spitze Stei, overlooking the Alpine community of Kandersteg in Switzerland’s Bern canton, is showing signs of instability as permafrost melts. Researchers connect the weakening to the same climate-driven processes that triggered a massive slide in the Loetschental valley, which devastated the neighboring village of Blatten last year. Residents such as Brigitte Jüni acknowledge the danger but note that authorities have prepared evacuation procedures.

Professor Markus Stoffel of the University of Geneva explains that melting ice acts like cement, making slopes increasingly prone to failure. While the entire 15-20 million-cubic-meter mass could cause a catastrophic event, experts believe a gradual breakdown is more probable. Greenpeace Switzerland’s Nathan Solothurnmann warns that continued warming may force some Alpine valleys to become uninhabitable.
