The Left Party Emerges as Berlin's Broad-Based Popular Party
In Berlin, the Left Party secured strong support from young students, migrant communities and older East Berlin voters, positioning itself as a new cross-demographic force.
The recent Berlin election highlighted the Left Party's ability to unite disparate groups, from student precincts in Kreuzberg, Charlottenburg and Friedrichshain to migrant-dense areas such as Neukölln and the Wedding. It also defended its traditional strongholds in the former East Berlin districts of Lichtenberg and Treptow-Köpenick. By converting a substantial number of former non-voters—around 75,000—the party outperformed the AfD, which attracted roughly 61,000 former abstainers.
Young voters aged 16-34 gave the Left its highest shares, especially among women under 25, while older voters over 60 showed weaker support. The party’s success is linked to its stance on migration, housing costs and foreign policy issues that resonate with its varied electorate.
