Think tank says Labour must secure lasting public backing for EU re-entry

IPPR research shows 52% of surveyed Britons favour rejoining the EU, prompting calls for Labour to build durable support for a medium-term membership goal.

The Institute for Public Policy Research released a report urging the Labour government to pursue full EU membership as a medium-term target, citing poll data that 52% of respondents favor rejoining while 29% prefer staying out. The survey, conducted with Persuasion UK, also revealed that a majority of Labour supporters considering Reform UK still back re-entry. Analysts stress the need for Labour to build "durable" voter support to answer tough questions on topics like the euro, free movement and budget contributions.

The report suggests that incremental Brexit-reset deals on trade, youth mobility and defence are insufficient without a comprehensive membership plan. Experts caution against overpromising and highlight the importance of maintaining high public approval throughout a potentially lengthy negotiation process.

Why it matters
