Third set of remains identified on Lanark County property linked to missing Smiths Falls man

Police have confirmed that the latest human remains discovered on a property near Smiths Falls belong to Lawrence Bertrim, who vanished in 2022.

Ontario Provincial Police have identified the most recent human remains uncovered on a property near Smiths Falls as belonging to Lawrence Bertrim, who was last seen in downtown Smiths Falls in September 2022. The remains were located on the Kelly Jordan Road parcel on August 6, a day after authorities announced the recovery of Robert Lambert's body there in July. Earlier, in October 2025, the same site yielded the remains of Robbie Thomson, whose death resulted in four murder charges.

While the cause of Bertrim's death is still under investigation and no charges have been laid, a $50,000 reward for tips that lead to a conviction remains in effect. Detectives highlighted the emotional impact on Bertrim's family after nearly four years of uncertainty and urged continued cooperation from the community. The case has drawn considerable local attention, given the concentration of multiple missing-person discoveries on a single property.

Why it matters

The identification brings closure to a four-year-old missing-person case and underscores ongoing safety concerns in the Smiths Falls community.
