Thirteen schoolchildren fall ill after meal at Bihor countryside inn

During a school excursion, 24 pupils from Oradea were lodged at a pension in Vadu Crișului between early September. Thirteen of them developed moderate food-borne illness, exhibiting nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea, and one also developed a fever. Initial treatment by SMURD and the county ambulance service led to transport of eleven children to Oradea County Hospital, where doctors confirmed the diagnosis.

Two more students later sought care and one was admitted for isolation. Health officials are analysing food samples from the dinner that included pasta with Bolognese sauce and are also testing water from a nearby spring that some children drank. The pension received a monetary penalty and its food-preparation activities have been halted pending the outcome of the epidemiological investigation.
