Thousands flee Ethiopian border town amid Somali and Oromia clashes

Escalating fighting between Somali and Oromia forces in southern Ethiopia has driven thousands of people across the border into Kenya, UN agencies report.

Fighting between Somali and Oromia regional forces in southern Ethiopia intensified after a flag was hoisted in Moyale, prompting a surge of people to seek safety across the Ethiopian-Kenyan border. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees notes that thousands have arrived in Kenya, with a large share being women and children. Some have found accommodation with family members, while others are housed in provisional reception sites.

Relief agencies stress the urgent need for food, potable water, shelter, sanitation facilities and health services. The UNHCR is working closely with the Kenyan Red Cross and additional humanitarian actors to assist both the newcomers and host communities. Ethiopia continues to grapple with multiple armed conflicts, including long-standing insurgencies in Oromia and Amhara and renewed fighting in Tigré, while tensions with neighboring Eritrea remain high.

Why it matters

The displacement highlights growing instability in Ethiopia and strains Kenya's humanitarian capacity.
