Thousands Form Human Chains Across Germany to Demand Climate Action and Political Renewal

On Saturday, participants created linked human chains in dozens of German cities, calling for stronger environmental protection and a fresh political direction.

A coordinated protest took place on Saturday, with human chains assembled in more than 100 German cities under the slogan “It’s burning!”. Environmental NGOs, religious bodies, unions and allied groups planned the actions, estimating the combined length at about 21 kilometres. The route was designed to start at the Federal Constitutional Court in Karlsruhe and extend through dozens of municipalities to the Federal Chancellery in Berlin.

Participants displayed empty white pages to represent a fresh start, urging protection of basic living conditions for today’s citizens and future generations. Organisers highlighted recent heat-related deaths, floods and widespread forest fires across Europe as evidence of insufficient political response. They also criticised perceived influence of lobby groups on democracy and called for a collective, peaceful resolution of the crises.

Why it matters

The protest signals growing public pressure in Germany for urgent climate policies and democratic reforms.
