Thousands of Triathletes Flood Chicago Lakefront for SuperTri Event Amid Road Closures
Chicago's lakefront hosts the SuperTri Chicago triathlon, drawing thousands of participants while city streets are closed for the two-day competition.
On Sunday morning, thousands of athletes gathered at Chicago's lakefront to compete in the SuperTri Chicago, the country's biggest triathlon. The swimming leg was ongoing at about 8 a.m., after which participants will move on to bike and run courses that traverse Grant Park and the shoreline. The competition runs for two days, featuring a children's triathlon on Saturday, and attracted more than 9,000 entrants last year.
Event promoters say the race stimulates local commerce. To accommodate the race, the city has instituted extensive road closures on streets such as East Balbo Drive, DuSable Lake Shore Drive, North Lake Shore Drive, and several Wacker and Randolph avenues, with specific reopening times listed for each segment.
Why it matters
The race brings a large influx of visitors and economic activity to Chicago while disrupting normal traffic patterns.
