Thousands rally in Austrian cities demanding stronger climate action
Mass protests took place in Vienna and six other Austrian cities, with participants calling for more ambitious climate policies as the government implements a fuel-price brake.
On a Friday afternoon, Vienna's Praterstern, a major traffic junction, was temporarily cleared of cars as thousands of climate activists marched, joined by hundreds in six other Austrian cities. Fridays for Future organized the strike, pointing to the government's failure to address an exceptionally hot season that health agency AGES links to 995 heat-related fatalities. Protesters demanded that Chancellor Stocker name the victims and guarantee future protection, while also opposing a planned tunnel under the Donau-Auen National Park.
The rally moved toward the Ministry of Agriculture and Climate, led by Norbert Totschnig, where participants called for binding climate targets and penalties for missed goals. Critics also voiced discontent with the recently introduced fuel-price brake, which they say makes public transport more expensive and raises the cost of the Vienna annual ticket from 2027 onward. Various signs and music accompanied the march, underscoring the call for immediate, science-based climate action.
Why it matters
The protests highlight growing public pressure on Austria to adopt stronger climate measures amid rising heat-related deaths.
