Thousands rally in Barcelona demanding protection for Ceuta against Moroccan claims
A large demonstration in Barcelona highlighted support for Ceuta and called for its defense against perceived Moroccan expansionism.
In Barcelona, a massive crowd assembled for the annual Fiesta Nacional, incorporating a vibrant parade led by Hispanic American immigrant organisations. The rally focused on defending Ceuta and demanding protection for its citizens against what organisers describe as Moroccan expansionist ambitions. A coalition of groups, including Espanya i Catalans, Empresaris de Catalunya, and others, signed a statement emphasizing that the situation in Ceuta affects the whole of Spain and Catalonia alike.
The march moved through the Passeig de Gràcia, passing the Pedrera and Plaça de Catalunya, where a fair of participating entities was held. Despite a municipal ban on floral offerings at the Columbus statue, a devotional procession brought an image of the Virgin of the Pillar to the monument, concluding with a priest’s sermon. The event underscored a display of Spanish unity and solidarity with Ceuta’s inhabitants.
Why it matters
