Tonight’s polls in Beaches-East York, Chicoutimi-Le Fjord and North Vancouver-Capilano will fill vacancies left by former Liberal ministers Jonathan Wilkinson and Nathaniel Erskine-Smith, and a Conservative MP appointed to the Senate by Prime Minister Mark Carney. The Liberals, who turned a minority into a narrow majority earlier this year, currently hold 170 seats, including the Speaker, versus 167 for the opposition.
Securing the two Liberal-friendly ridings would raise their count to 172, preserving their governing edge even if the opposition wins the Quebec seat. The by-elections unfold against the backdrop of a heated U.S. trade war, making the outcomes a barometer of public support for Carney’s policies. Results will be streamed live as polls close, starting at 9:30 p.m. ET for the Ontario and Quebec ridings and earlier for the British Columbia district.
