Three CHP mayors in southern Turkey detained in large-scale corruption probe

Police detained Mersin mayor Vahap Seçer and the mayors of Yenişehir and Mezitli in a sweeping corruption investigation affecting 59 suspects.

Morning raids on Thursday led to the detention of Mersin Metropolitan Municipality mayor Vahap Seçer and the mayors of the Yenişehir and Mezitli districts, all members of the opposition Republican People’s Party. Authorities say a total of 59 people were arrested in connection with corrupt public-tender practices that caused losses of more than TL 330 million in Mersin, over TL 1.1 billion in Mezitli and TL 105 million in Yenişehir.

Prosecutors also allege that the Mezitli mayor faced separate accusations of ordering armed attacks on rivals and a local New Party office. The CHP, under new chair Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, pledged a "cleansing process" that will include a performance-monitoring system and report cards for mayors, aiming to bar those who fail from future nominations. The party plans a mayoral meeting to tighten central control and discuss upcoming strategies. The investigation reflects a broader pattern of alleged corruption in municipalities run by CHP officials over the past two years.

Why it matters

The arrests expose alleged large-scale corruption in Turkish local government and test the CHP's anti-corruption reforms.
