Three men emerge from Manhattan sewer near Netanyahu hotel on early morning
Around 4:30 a.m. on Wednesday, three individuals climbed out of a storm-drain on the Upper East Side near the hotel where Benjamin Netanyahu was staying and fled in vehicles.
Police say the men accessed the surface through a manhole close to Park Avenue and East 61st Street. They left the scene by car after emerging from the underground conduit. Authorities have found no link between the incident and Netanyahu, the United Nations General Assembly, or any planned attack. Recent months have seen similar sewer-exploration incidents in the city, often motivated by scavenging after storms. Because of the location’s proximity to the UN venue, federal officials joined the NYPD for additional security checks.
