Three Penang police officers remanded over alleged extortion claim
Three police officers in Penang have been remanded for four days while investigators probe an alleged extortion incident in Pulau Tikus.
A magistrate, Siti Nurul Suhaila Baharin, issued a four-day remand for three Penang police officers - a sergeant, a lance corporal and a constable - to aid investigations under Section 384 of the Penal Code. The arrests followed a police report by a man who said he and three cousins were stopped by individuals claiming to be police at about 2.30 am on August 6 in Pulau Tikus. The victims were handcuffed, threatened with false accusations in a Telekom Malaysia cable-theft case, and forced to withdraw cash from an ATM on Jalan Burma, ultimately handing over RM13,000.
Separate raids from the previous day through early this morning led to the officers' detention at several locations across the state. The remand will remain in effect until Wednesday, September 16, as investigators continue to examine the alleged extortion.
