Three separate ICE arrests follow sanctuary releases linked to fatal crash, boat capsizing and stabbing
ICE detained three undocumented individuals in different states after they were released by local authorities despite detainers, each case resulting in a death.
ICE officials reported that Heriton Da Silva Aredes, an illegal immigrant from Brazil facing vehicular homicide charges, was finally apprehended in Boston after local officials in Taunton, Middleboro and Stoughton released him on three separate occasions despite ICE detainers. The department blamed sanctuary policies for the missed opportunities to prevent the fatal crash. Separately, DHS announced the arrest of Salvadoran Manuel Ernesto Hernandez-Umana after his unlicensed, overcrowded boat capsized in New York Harbor, killing a 27-year-old woman and her five-month-old child.
A third case involved Alexis Antonio Cedillos-Campos, a 19-year-old illegal immigrant arrested in Fairfax County, Virginia, for the stabbing and arson of Carmen Lizet Puch, a 42-year-old mother. Officials linked each release to broader immigration enforcement challenges and pledged swift removal of the suspects.
Why it matters
The cases highlight how sanctuary practices can allow dangerous undocumented offenders to remain in communities.
