Three suspects charged with defrauding an elderly victim of millions
Norwegian prosecutors have indicted three individuals for large-scale fraud after an elderly person was tricked into transferring millions of kroner.
Økokrim filed charges of aggravated fraud against three suspects who persuaded an elderly individual to move about eight million kroner to accounts controlled by the fraudsters. The victim was told that the money would be secured by gold bars, precious stones and carpets, which in reality were worth only a fraction of the amount transferred. The deception came to light after the victim's bank flagged the transaction as suspicious, leading police to intervene and freeze a significant share of the money.
Prosecutors highlighted the case as an example of how mandatory reporting and anti-money-laundering laws can help recover assets for victims. The case is being pursued under the "Fra stans til inndraging" project, which targets fraud offenses.
