Three Taiwanese nationals detained in Myanmar over alleged online fraud scheme
The MOFA confirmed the detention of three Taiwanese individuals accused of participating in telecom fraud in Myanmar. The country recently enacted an Anti-Online Scam Law that subjects foreign perpetrators to severe penalties, including possible capital punishment. The ministry also warned Taiwanese travelers about stricter Thai immigration rules and reduced visa-free stay limits that take effect next week.
According to Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, three Taiwanese citizens were taken into custody in Myanmar on suspicion of involvement in an online fraud operation. Myanmar's newly passed Anti-Online Scam Law, effective from July 31, treats foreign fraudsters as serious criminals and allows for penalties up to the death sentence. MOFA spokesman Hsiao Kuang-wei emphasized that the legislation replaces lighter immigration measures with full criminal prosecution.
In related regional updates, Thailand has tightened its entry and exit controls, introducing a deportation regulation for foreigners convicted of crimes carrying five-year sentences and cutting visa-free stays for Taiwanese travelers to 30 days. The ministry urged Taiwanese abroad to respect local laws and avoid illegal activities that could jeopardize their legal status and Taiwan's international reputation.
