Three teenage boys drown after strong waves hit them at Rushikonda beach

Three 14-year-old Class 9 students were swept away by a sudden wave at Rushikonda beach in Visakhapatnam and later found dead.

On a Gandhi Jayanti school holiday, six Class 9 pupils from a Madhurawada private school gathered at Rushikonda beach near the IT Park Junction. Four of the boys waded into knee-deep water when a powerful wave struck, pulling three of them—Pilla Prashanth, Sattaruvu Suryaprakash and Sabbavarapu Ritesh—into the sea. Sattaruvu Hemanth escaped back to shore, while the other three were swept away.

Coast Guard helicopters, marine police, local lifeguards and fishermen joined the search. Prashanth’s body was retrieved that evening; the other two victims were found washed ashore early Saturday. Police officials oversaw the rescue effort and confirmed the identities of the deceased.
