Three vessels seized for illegal fishing off Penang's coast
Three boats were detained after being caught fishing in a protected zone off Penang, violating several fisheries regulations.
A routine inspection by the Batu Maung Fisheries Conservation and Protection Base resulted in the detention of three boats that had entered a designated fishing zone off Penang. The patrol team arrived early in the morning and observed the vessels actively fishing in the prohibited area. Investigators determined that the boats breached Section 8(b) of the Fisheries Act 1985 by operating beyond permitted boundaries, using nets with mesh smaller than 38 mm, and hiring foreign labor without the Fisheries Department's consent.
The total value of the confiscated equipment and catch is estimated at RM4.5 million. Penang Fisheries Department director Azimah Jumatli emphasized the department's commitment to protecting fisheries and ensuring that all fishermen adhere to the law. She warned that any misconduct at sea will not be tolerated.
