Three-year-old rescued with minor injuries as mother dies in Delhi building collapse
A three-year-old boy survived a collapse in Seemapuri, Delhi with only minor injuries, while his mother was among five people killed.
When the building in Delhi's Seemapuri neighborhood collapsed on Wednesday, residents first found a three-year-old child sobbing next to his grandmother Salma. The boy escaped with minor leg injuries and was discharged from Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital on Thursday. His mother, 35-year-old Nusrat, who had been recuperating from a recent operation, was later recovered dead, making her one of five fatalities that also included her aunt Hazra Bibi.
The collapse occurred as Nusrat was descending stairs to bring food to her son, and the structure fell onto the lane where she stood. The building, estimated to be 20-25 years old, was part of a jhuggi-jhopadi cluster overseen by the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board. Rescue operations are still underway as locals fear additional people may be trapped. The tragedy adds to a series of recent building failures in the capital, highlighting ongoing concerns about construction oversight and safety enforcement.
