Three-year-old's pool drowning sparks call for stricter fence regulations in the NT
The death of three-year-old Dion Robbins in a Darwin suburb pool has intensified scrutiny of fence safety and compliance in the Northern Territory.
A three-year-old boy, Dion Robbins, died in June 2025 after slipping into a backyard pool in the Darwin suburb of Moulden. Evidence showed he used a stool to reach the gate latch, which was found latched but not self-closing. Four months before the tragedy, an inspection had noted rust damage and the need for repairs, yet the fence remained non-compliant when re-examined 45 days after the incident.
Since 2002, 597 children under four have drowned in Australia, with a disproportionately high share in the Northern Territory. The inquest highlighted the importance of constant adult supervision and the removal of climbable objects near pool barriers. Deputy Coroner Chrissy McConnel will assess whether the territory's pool-fencing compliance regime requires overhaul, including more regular checks.
