Thunderbolt 5 doubles the bidirectional bandwidth of Thunderbolt 4 and raises power delivery to 240 W, but most everyday devices still can’t exploit the upgrade.
Thunderbolt 5 retains the USB-C form factor of its predecessor but offers a substantial performance leap, delivering up to 120 Gbps in one direction and 40 Gbps in the opposite, effectively doubling Thunderbolt 4’s symmetric 40 Gbps rate. Power delivery climbs to 240 W, a notable increase over the 100 W ceiling of Thunderbolt 4, enabling faster charging for premium laptops and more robust support for multiple 4K or certain 8K displays.
The standard remains backward compatible with Thunderbolt 4, 3 and USB4 devices, though actual speeds will be limited by the slowest component in the chain. Apple’s Thunderbolt 5 Pro cable is a one-meter passive unit priced at $69, while its Thunderbolt 4 Pro cables are longer, active, and cost more. High-end machines such as Lenovo’s Legion 9i Gen 10 and Razer Blade 18 can benefit from the higher wattage, but only if their USB-C ports are designed for it.
For most consumers—those with single-monitor desks or routine external-SSD backups—Thunderbolt 4 still offers ample capability. Professionals who regularly transfer large datasets or run demanding multi-display workstations stand to gain the most from the upgraded bandwidth and power.
