Tim Jarvis named permanent chief executive of Britain’s energy regulator

Tim Jarvis, who has been serving as interim chief executive since March, has been confirmed as the permanent head of Ofgem.

Britain’s energy watchdog Ofgem has confirmed Tim Jarvis as its permanent chief executive, ending his interim stint that started in March. He succeeds Jonathan Brearley, who stepped down after a six-year term that saw the regulator navigate the Covid-19 pandemic and the energy upheaval caused by Russia’s war in Ukraine. Chairman Mark McAllister highlighted a thorough recruitment process and expressed confidence that Jarvis will lead Ofgem into its next chapter, balancing continuity with future-oriented goals.

The appointment coincides with a recent 4% increase in the energy price cap, raising the average household bill for gas and electricity to £1,723. Jarvis said Ofgem will continue collaborating with the government, suppliers, and consumer groups to shield households, especially during the winter, and to foster investment in a sustainable energy transition. Energy Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh welcomed the move, emphasizing the aim of a fair and affordable market.

Why it matters

The new leadership will shape how Britain regulates energy prices and supports the shift to greener power for millions of households.
