Tim Montgomerie vows to contest Reform UK suspension over internal criticism

Political commentator Tim Montgomerie told Newsnight he will appeal his suspension from Reform UK after publicly criticizing senior party members.

Tim Montgomerie, a right-leaning commentator who switched from the Conservatives to Reform UK in 2024, announced on one outlet Newsnight that he will challenge his recent suspension from the party. The disciplinary step was taken after he criticised party leader Nigel Farage’s “aggrieved tone” after the Clacton by-election and described senior member Zia Yusuf as behaving like a child on a Spectator podcast. Montgomerie said the appeal will serve as a test case for whether Reform can accommodate free speech and internal dissent.

He reiterated his backing of Reform’s stance on immigration and welfare, emphasizing that his public remarks were intended to improve the party. In a video posted on X, he claimed the suspension was made without Farage’s knowledge and reminded the leadership of his warning that he would be critical at times. The party now faces a decision on whether to reinstate him or keep the suspension in place.

Why it matters
