Timber Fire roars through Big Sur, nearly 4,000 acres burned, Highway 1 shut

A rapidly expanding wildfire dubbed the Timber Fire has scorched almost 4,000 acres of Big Sur’s rugged landscape, with Cal Fire reporting 3,774.6 acres burned and just 5% containment on Wednesday. Around 1,000 firefighters are battling the blaze, which threatens roughly 350 structures, especially homes along Partington Ridge Road, and is forcing crews to build a continuous containment line rather than defend individual properties.

Difficult access, steep canyons and dense vegetation have hampered efforts, while cloud-to-ground lightning briefly forced crews to withdraw from their lines. Although recent rain offers some relief in lower elevations, it will not extinguish the fire burning above the coastal fog. Highway 1 stays closed between Fernwood Resort and the Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park Vista Point, disrupting traffic and the region’s lucrative tourist season; the owner of Nepenthe estimates $70,000 in lost sales each day the restaurant remains shut. No structures have been reported damaged and no injuries have been confirmed, and the fire’s cause is still under investigation.
