Timeshare mogul Stephen Cloobeck donates to GOP governor hopeful after backing Democrat Swalwell

Stephen Cloabeck, a billionaire who made his fortune in timeshares, has shifted his political allegiance by donating the maximum $39,200 permitted to Republican Steve Hilton’s campaign for California governor. Cloabeck had been one of the biggest financial backers of Democrat Eric Swalwell, contributing more than $1 million and even providing a Beverly Hills mansion for Swalwell’s visits. The relationship ended after several women accused Swalwell of rape and sexual assault, prompting Cloabeck to denounce the Democratic Party and announce a move toward libertarianism.

Hilton said the two met through a mutual friend and share concerns about California’s management, though they have not spoken recently. Cloabeck is also under criminal indictment for attempting to influence witnesses in his ex-fiancée Adva Lavie's case, pleading not guilty to three felony and one misdemeanor count.
