Timnit Gebru warns AI systems amplify bias and widen inequality
AI ethicist Timnit Gebru discusses how artificial intelligence reinforces societal prejudices and calls for technology that serves everyone.
Timnit Gebru, a prominent voice in AI ethics, explained that current artificial intelligence systems embed and amplify entrenched societal biases. As founder and executive director of the Distributed Artificial Intelligence Research Institute, she leads a collective of scholars and engineers committed to inclusive technology. Gebru pointed out that the internet, which supplies training data, is dominated by Western, male viewpoints, resulting in skewed algorithmic behavior.
She recounted her experience at Google, where she co-led the ethical AI team before being terminated in 2020 after releasing a study on the high financial and environmental toll of large language models and their propensity for racist outputs. Gebru also co-established Black in AI, a nonprofit aimed at increasing Black participation and visibility in artificial intelligence research.
