Tinubu kicks off re-election bid in Kaduna amid economic and security challenges
President Bola Tinubu launched his campaign for a second term in Kaduna, urging voters to back him despite soaring living costs and ongoing security threats.
In Kaduna, President Bola Tinubu formally opened his bid for a second presidential term, speaking to thousands of supporters at the 10,000-capacity Ranchers Bees stadium. He argued that recent policy moves—such as ending fuel subsidies and devaluing the naira—are improving public finances, even as petrol prices have surged to around 1,400 naira per litre in Lagos and Abuja and up to 1,500 naira in parts of the north, deepening a cost-of-living crisis.
Tinubu dismissed criticism from opposition parties, claiming they are responsible for rising hunger and poverty. The upcoming January 16 election is likely to be dominated by economic performance and security concerns, with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi positioned as his chief challengers. The All Progressives Congress says it enjoys the backing of 32 of Nigeria’s 36 state governors, giving Tinubu a strong organisational network, though governors have not always delivered votes in past contests. Tinubu announced he will focus on governing rather than touring all 36 states, planning personal appearances in 12 states and a final rally in Lagos on January 9.
Why it matters
The campaign launch signals how Nigeria's economy and security will shape a pivotal presidential election.
