Tiny Lunar Orbiter Aims to Hear Universe's First Radio Whisper

A suitcase-sized satellite called CosmoCube will orbit the Moon’s far side to detect faint hydrogen radio emissions from the universe’s dark ages.

CosmoCube, a compact satellite roughly the size of a carry-on bag, is being developed with UK Space Agency support and could launch within five years. By orbiting the Moon’s far side, the probe will be protected from Earth’s ionospheric blockage and human-made radio interference, allowing it to listen for the weak 21-centimetre hydrogen line from the cosmic dark ages. During each two-hour orbit, the Moon will block terrestrial signals for about 40 minutes, giving the instrument a clear listening window.

The mission aims to record around 1,000 hours of observations across a two-year span, using a lightweight antenna operating between 10-50 MHz and frequent calibrations to separate genuine cosmic signals from instrument noise. Researchers will apply statistical techniques to filter out Milky Way emissions and antenna distortions, hoping to capture the universe’s first radio glow and shed light on early dark-matter dynamics. The project showcases a low-cost approach to probing the earliest epoch of structure formation.
