Tips to Maximize Battery Longevity for Apple AirTag Trackers

Apple AirTags use a replaceable CR2032 coin cell that typically lasts about a year, but usage habits can shorten that span. Simple practices can extend battery life.

Apple’s AirTag tracker runs on a standard CR2032 coin-cell battery that Apple claims should endure over a year, though real-world performance varies with how the device is used. Battery life shortens when users repeatedly trigger the speaker, employ Precision Finding, or constantly check the tag’s status in the Find My app. To prolong power, experts recommend using quality branded batteries, steering clear of bitterant-coated variants, and keeping the tag out of extreme heat or cold.

Limiting unnecessary pings—especially on moving items like car keys—also conserves energy. When the battery drops, the Find My app displays an orange warning, and the AirTag will disable sound alerts and Precision Finding until the cell is swapped.

Why it matters

Understanding simple usage habits can keep AirTags functional longer, saving users time and money on frequent battery changes.
