Tirol ÖVP local official resigns after racist outburst at Munich Oktoberfest

A deputy ÖVP party chairman from Innsbruck-Land quit after a video showed him making racist remarks toward a Black influencer at Munich’s Oktoberfest.

A deputy chairman of the ÖVP in the Innsbruck-Land district stepped down after a video from Munich’s Oktoberfest captured him directing a dark-skinned influencer to go home, insisting that only “white” Germans reside there. The incident, filmed by the influencer, quickly spread on social media and drew sharp criticism from rival parties - the SPÖ, Greens and NEOS - as well as the regional association of vegetable growers. ÖVP regional councilor and district party chair Cornelia Hagele publicly condemned the statements and urged a stand against racism and division.

The farmer, who works in vegetable production, apologized, attributing his comments to intoxication and saying they did not reflect his values. He accepted responsibility and announced his resignation to BR24.

Why it matters

The resignation highlights political accountability and the growing intolerance for racist behavior in public life.
