Titanosaur Eggs Likely Warmed by Buried Vegetation, Study Shows
Researchers concluded that massive titanosaurs incubated their large eggs by burying them in decomposing plant matter, a method similar to modern crocodiles.
Scientists examining eggshell fragments from the Late Cretaceous Chorillo Formation in southern Argentina found that the gigantic titanosaurs employed a burial incubation technique akin to modern crocodiles. Electron-microscope analysis revealed unusually porous shells, a feature that supports breathing when eggs are enveloped by decomposing plant material that produces heat. The titanosaur's massive bodies could not safely brood their relatively small, volleyball-sized eggs, so burying them prevented crushing and provided a stable temperature in a climate comparable to present-day New York City, far from the equator.
The study, led by paleontologists Darla Zelenitsky, Kohei Tanaka and collaborators, was published in Royal Society Open Science. Results suggest that even the largest dinosaurs could reproduce in higher-latitude regions by adapting nesting strategies, underscoring their ecological flexibility. Tsu-Ruei Yang noted that variations in eggshell thickness elsewhere hint at diverse nesting behaviors across the group.
