TNB commits to connect approved data centres to grid within a year

Tenaga Nasional Bhd pledged to link any data centre cleared by the ministry-chaired committee to Malaysia’s electricity grid within twelve months, stressing the need for a robust domestic network to support the ASEAN Power Grid.

During a panel at Singapore International Energy Week, Ahmad Sazree Abd Aziz of Tenaga Nasional Bhd announced that any data centre approved by the ministry-chaired committee will be connected to the national grid within one year. He explained that the ASEAN Power Grid can enhance regional electricity security, but its real advantage depends on a solid domestic transmission and distribution network. TNB aims to keep pace with growing electricity consumption driven by economic growth, residential and commercial use, and energy-intensive data centres.

The utility outlined three practical steps: accurate demand forecasting, systematic network capacity planning, and focused infrastructure development. Additionally, TNB plans to modernise and digitalise its distribution networks to facilitate renewable energy connections at the local level and to improve integrated demand-supply planning across transmission and distribution. Aligning forecasts with investment priorities is intended to strengthen the overall electricity system as demand rises.

Why it matters

Fast grid connections for data centres are crucial for Malaysia’s energy security and to support regional power cooperation.
