Toddler Hospitalized with E. coli After Drinking Raw Milk for Constipation

A 17-month-old in California was critically ill with E. coli after her parents gave her raw milk to ease constipation, prompting emergency treatment.

In California, 17-month-old Brooklyn Marris suffered severe vomiting that progressed from yellow to blue-green bile, leading her parents to seek emergency care. At a children's hospital 70 miles away, she was placed on a ventilator, received dialysis, and experienced three cardiac arrests before stabilizing. Physicians identified hemolytic uremic syndrome caused by a harmful E. coli strain, which the parents attribute to raw milk they had been giving her to treat constipation.

After weeks of intensive care, Brooklyn survived but now has a slight limp and may endure chronic kidney problems, and doctors warned she should never consume alcohol. Her mother, Emily Marris, expressed deep remorse and is suing the farm that sold the milk, alleging it was improperly marketed for human consumption.
