The shooting occurred just before 11:30 a.m. in the Central Valley community of Pixley, located in Tulare County, California. Sheriff's deputies administered first-aid until medical responders arrived and transported the child to a hospital; his health status was not confirmed at the time of reporting.
The Tulare County Sheriff’s Office issued a statement describing the incident as an accidental discharge during cleaning. The report also referenced CDC data showing that between 2003 and 2021, 1,262 children died unintentionally from firearms, with a portion of those incidents occurring during loading, unloading, or cleaning.
