Tokenisation could unlock hidden Indian wealth and lower loan rates, says Mudrex CEO

Mudrex CEO Edul Patel argued that tokenising assets like gold, property and bonds would make ownership clearer, improve credit assessment and reduce borrowing costs in India.

At the Smart Investor Arena 2026, Mudrex co-founder and CEO Edul Patel highlighted that India's vast household wealth remains hidden due to fragmented ownership records, limiting lenders' ability to assess creditworthiness. He explained that tokenising assets such as gold, bonds and real estate would create transparent, verifiable digital representations, enabling lower-interest borrowing and broader investor access. Patel pointed to the first tokenised bond by Rural Electrification Corporation as a milestone, but warned that secondary markets and legal frameworks for many assets, especially land, are still evolving.

He called for existing regulators to oversee tokenised assets within their domains and for a sovereign public utility akin to one outlet to standardise ownership verification. The discussion also touched on India's 30% crypto gains tax and the need for platforms to demonstrate broader economic benefits. Patel envisions tokenisation becoming an invisible layer of financial services over the next five years, expanding affordable access to diverse assets.

Why it matters

If adopted, tokenisation could make large portions of Indian wealth usable as collateral, lowering loan costs for consumers.
