Tokyo Emerges as Sole Asian City Inside Global Top-20 Rankings

Oxford Economics placed Tokyo as the only Asian metropolis among the world’s top 20 cities in its 2026 Global Cities Index.

Oxford Economics combined quantitative forecasts with qualitative data to rank the world’s 1,000 biggest cities across five pillars, awarding Tokyo an overall 89.5 out of 100. The Japanese capital scored 69.7 for economics, 92.9 for human capital, 80.1 for quality of life, 66.3 for environment and 92.3 for governance, positioning it as a vital global financial hub and the only Asian city in the top-20. With a GDP of roughly $1.5 trillion, Tokyo sits second after New York’s $2.6 trillion, and it ranks third worldwide for human capital.

The report notes that domestic migration fuels Tokyo’s large, relatively young population, supporting its role as a headquarters for many firms. In contrast, other Asian cities such as Singapore (29th) and Seoul (38th) remain outside the top-20, while Shanghai, Beijing and Delhi fall beyond the top 100. Oxford Economics projects that Chinese and Indian cities will drive major GDP growth through 2050, naming Kuala Lumpur, Shenzhen, Ho Chi Minh City and Bengaluru as “Cities to Watch.”

Why it matters

The ranking highlights Tokyo’s global economic clout and underscores the limited representation of Asian cities among the world’s most influential urban centers.
