Toledo's The Blade faces shutdown unless a buyer steps forward

The Blade, Toledo's historic newspaper dating back to 1835, is being placed on the market as Block Communications declares that continued operation is no longer financially viable. In an email to staff, president and chief operating officer Jodi Miehls called the move an "extremely difficult decision" and noted that the paper has endured losses for years. The Blade has earned a Pulitzer Prize for investigative reporting in 2004 and has produced notable journalists, including Mildred Wirt Benson, the original author behind the Nancy Drew series.

Block Communications previously saved the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette by arranging a sale to the nonprofit Venetoulis Institute for Local Journalism, but it says further support for The Blade is impossible. The company warned that without a buyer, both one outlet edition and its digital platform will cease publication by the end of the year.
