Tom Blomfield describes Anthropic as a hyper-earnest AI research hub

Tom Blomfield, a prominent figure in UK tech and Monzo co-founder, took a sabbatical from Y Combinator to work on Anthropic’s compute team starting in July. In a Tuesday X post he described the company as “not perfect” but possessing the strongest sense of mission he has encountered, even outshining Monzo, which he previously considered an outlier. He characterized Anthropic’s employees as a “hyper-earnest group of meganerds” who are intensely focused on ensuring AI benefits humans.

The startup’s culture, highlighted by head of growth Amol Avasare, allows staff to question the CEO openly, even on Slack. Anthropic has been aggressively hiring, attracting former Google DeepMind researchers such as John Jumper and recent compute hire Amir Salek, positioning itself alongside OpenAI as a coveted Silicon Valley destination. Blomfield, now a “member of technical staff,” said his daily work involves learning about data-center leases, gas turbines, and project finance, feeling like a beginner again. The company did not respond to a request for comment.
