Tom Pidcock eyes historic triple world title as open Montreal road race looms
Tom Pidcock says the upcoming World Championships road race in Montreal offers his best chance to become world champion on road and complete a unique triple of titles across cyclo-cross, mountain bike and road.
With Tadej Pogacar absent, the World Championships road race in Montreal is expected to be one of the most unpredictable in years. British rider Tom Pidcock, who will share leadership of the national team with veteran Adam Yates, views the demanding Mont Royal circuit as his best shot at a road world title, which would make him the first rider to hold world crowns in cyclo-cross, mountain bike and road. His confidence follows solid results in the Canadian Grand Prix - fourth in Quebec and sixth in Montreal - and a recent mountain-bike world championship in Val di Sole.
Pidcock highlighted the course’s long climbs, especially the Cote Camillien-Houde, and a headwind that could shape the race. He also mentioned rivals such as Isaac del Toro, Paul Seixas and Remco Evenepoel, while acknowledging the depth of the field may keep him off the podium. The 27-year-old has been training at altitude in Colorado after moving to Pinarello Q36.5, where he now enjoys a clear leadership role.
