Tony Blair think-tank urges Britain to set a decade-long EU re-entry goal

In a new publication titled “Beyond Leave and Remain: A Path to Rejoining a Reformed Europe,” the think-tank led by Tony Blair calls for the United Kingdom to pledge a clear objective of rejoining the European Union within a decade, contingent on internal EU reforms. The authors point to the EU’s recent offer of associate membership to Canada as a sign of increased openness toward non-member states, while rejecting a straight return to the single market and customs union.

They argue that a reformed EU, bolstered by recommendations from Mario Draghi’s competitiveness report, could become a global superpower, and that Britain should help shape that future. The report also recommends establishing a UK-EU industrial council, rejoining the EU’s SAFE defence fund, and cooperating on AI, cyber-resilience, defence and energy. Polling by Best for Britain suggests that a manifesto commitment to EU re-entry could significantly increase Labour’s seat count in the next election. The authors conclude that without a credible reform path for Europe, Britain should remain independent while continuing selective cooperation.
