Tooley Oil exits Sacramento convenience store and car-wash market

Tooley Oil Company has sold its 12 convenience stores and seven car washes in the Sacramento area to an undisclosed buyer, while keeping its wholesale fuel distribution business.

After almost five decades of operating retail outlets in Northern California, Tooley Oil Company has transferred ownership of its 12 convenience stores and seven car washes in the Sacramento metropolitan region to a confidential purchaser. The deal, facilitated by advisory firm Matrix Capital Markets Group, leaves the company’s wholesale motor-fuel distribution arm intact. Mick Tooley, president, described the sale as a bittersweet milestone and indicated that proceeds will support expansion of the wholesale business.

The stores, previously rebranded as Mixx Market and CleanMixx, were originally acquired from Tosco in 1978 and later became a Shell distributor. Cedric Fortemps of Matrix highlighted the family’s long-standing success and expressed confidence in Tooley’s future growth. This transaction follows a broader trend of regional convenience-store operators exiting the market this year.

Why it matters

The sale signals a shift in Tooley Oil’s focus toward wholesale fuel distribution, affecting local employment and the regional retail landscape.
