Top athletes reveal the single quality they deem essential for leadership

A survey of current and former pro athletes identified the most vital trait for effective leaders.

In a recent feature, one outlet gathered insights from eleven athletes spanning football, basketball, soccer, hockey, baseball, skiing and tennis about the core quality of a leader. Contributors like Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels stressed personal effort, while Las Vegas Aces guard Chelsea Gray pointed to flexibility in the face of setbacks. Others, such as former MLS star Charlie Davies and Nashville Predators center Jack Drury, highlighted positivity and tailoring leadership style to team needs.

Consistency, fairness, accountability and authentic trust were also repeatedly mentioned by Jeff Francoeur, Lo'eau LaBonta, Roquan Smith, Mikaela Shiffrin, Zaza Pachulia, Steph Curry, Claire Liu and Austin Hedges. The piece suggests that effective leadership hinges less on position and more on everyday behavior and mindset.
